So this is the Skarbrand model I have commissioned from Metal Fingered Villain over on Warseer. It's almost done (just needs axes), and then I'll have it in my hands for some paint at last.

Battleforge Games Tournament of Champions 2008: Khor-aeka's Bloody Host v. Ultramarines 2nd Company

I'll add more to this later. But this is how the game looked first turn:

And last turn..

I had a pretty sweet duel between a Bloodthirster and Captain Sicarius as well....

Lamenters Tactical Squad Visiroth

Veteran Sergeant Visiroth was promoted from squad leader after the previous Sergeant, Athelas, was killed on the surface of Optera. A strict adherant to the Codex Astartes, Visiroth often goes to battle sans helmet as to, "...feel the air of the battle."
Squad Visiroth is often equipped with tank-hunting weapons, which they have found great success with.

More Lamenters...

Captain Janus Roderic of Strike Force Iltempus

Janus Roderic was inducted into the fleet-based Lamenters chapter from their recruiting center on the planet New Iberia, located deep on the Eastern Fringe. He flew through the ranks of his chapter. Roderic was a Scout during the Lamenters participation in the Corinthian Crusade, fighting alongside the Ultramarines against the Orks of Charadon, by the time the chapter fought alongside the Astral Claws in the Serpentine Straights Wars Roderic had risen to the rank of Sergent, and by the time of the Badab War he was a member of the Command Squad of 3rd company Captain Orosius.
During the brutal boarding actions against the Minotaurs chapter Roderic slew no less than half a dozen Brother Marines with wide swings of his power fist. The Minotaurs were even fiercer opponents though. Despite Roderic doing everything he could to prevent it, Captain Orosius was eventually put down, killed by a Chaplain of the Minotaurs. In the aftermath of the Lamenters defeat Roderic was almost unanimously chosen to take Orosius' place at the head of the Company. So, at the head of the 3rd, Captain Janus Roderic headed into an unknown shadow to the East.
Another cruel twist of fate, the Lamenters could not have guessed what horrors their crusade would show them. They fought bravely against the jaws of Hive Fleet Kraken, but their chapter was doomed the moment it was created. On Malvolion Roderic fought bravely and thought quickly, and it's because of his actions that their remain any Lamenters alive in the galaxy. The timely escape of Roderic and nearly 300 of his brothers remains one of the few bright spots in the chapter's dark history.
After Malvolion the remaining marines split into five Strike Forces; Iltempus, Calima, Ostro, Vendavel, and Helios. Captain Roderic took command of Strike Force Iltempus, a force of hardened veterans, and does what he can to battle against the Kraken.

Oh the lamentations of fate...

Well first off I currently don't have a camera, so any articles will have to be displayed with found artwork, such as the fine piece above. This guy happens to be a Lamenters Space Marine, which is my newest current project.

For those of you who don't know about the Lamenters, they are a cursed founding chapter who use the gene-seed of Sanguinius with the Black Rage bred out. The downside being they have genetically bad luck. Examples of this include them accidentally siding with Huron during the Badab Uprising, and then for penance being sent into the mouth of Hivefleet Kraken. Barely three companies of Lamenters live in the galaxy now. I'm using the new foundations and washes to create the yellow for my armour. I'm going for more of a mustard, dark tone than the picture above. The recipe is this;

1.White spray undercoat
2.Tau Sept Ochre
3.Devlan Mud Wash
4. Iyanden Darksun
5.Highlight Golden Yellow
6.Highlight Sunburst Yellow

So far the checkers have been really fun to paint and I've also added them on place like kneepads and jump pack jets.

Here is the list I am making-

Captain Roderic w/ Bolter, Power Fist, Hellfire Rounds 135
Librarian Jordanes w/ Gate of Infinity, Plasma Pistol
Force Dome, Epistolary 165

8*Sternguard w/ 2*Combi-plasmas 210

10*Marines w/ Meltagun, Multimelta, Combi-melta 185

10*Marines w/ Meltagun, Multimelta, Combi-melta, Power Fist 210

5*Scouts w/ Heavy Bolter, Combi-melta 95

Fast Attack
10*Assault Marines w/ Power Weapon 205
5*Vanguard w/ Jump Packs, 2*Power Weapons 190

More Khorne than Orville Redenbacher...

Got some more stuff coming off the table...

I also have the Skarbrand commission rolling, so the army is really coming together. I've gotten four games in with a 1000 point version of the army, resulting in 3 wins and 1 tie. These deamons are really fun to play with!

Current Projects

Here are the Bloodcrushers I've been working on. I have two more on the bench about half way through, probably do them tonight. I'm waiting on that to come out to do my Heralds. So bad ass.

And here is the Stormlord I am working on as the last of the Methalor army. They really needed something big and scary for when those Macharian campaign Apocalypse battle come around. I picked it because it is the super-heavy most like a prison bus :). I pretty much discarded the version GW has, as it doesn't match the rules they wrote at all...

Battleforge Hobby Tournament 7/19

This first 5th ed. tournament in town had a huge turnout and was alot of fun. There were many multiple Land Raider armies in the field, proving the buffs to an AV 14 all around vehicle were apparent to all. I brought my 2000 point 5th ed. foot Eldar, this was the list:

Avatar of Khaine

Farseer Lu'twan w/ Spirit Stones, Doom, Fortune, Runes of Warding

10*Fire Dragons w/ Exarch w/ Crackshot
in Wave Serpent w/ Twin-linked shuriken cannon, shuriken cannon, spirit stones

6*Harlequins w/ Kisses, Shadowseer

10*Avengers w/ Exarch w/ Dual Cats, Bladestorm

10*Avengers w/ Exarch w/ Dual Cats, Bladestorm

9*Avengers w/ Exarch w/ Shimmershield, Defend
with Wave Serpent w/ Twin-linked scatterlaser, shuriken cannon, spirit stones

Fast Attack
Vyper w/ Scatter Laser

Hawks w/ Skyleap

Heavy Support
Wraithlord w/ Wraithsword, Brightlance

Wraithlord w/ Missle Launcher, Brightlance

Round 1 v. Adam's World Eaters

Primary objective: Win by 200 victory points
Secondary: Table quarters
Tertiary: Have your own copy of the rulebook
Bonus points: have a unit in the enemy deployment zone at the end; have a unit in your own deployment at the end

I got a really good deployment in this mission and Adam didn't really want to even try and approach my trench system full of Avengers. My Dragons destroyed his Land Raider and the Avatar (Sam'u'el'jak'sun) survived a charge by Kharn and his retinue of Berserkers and dispatched them with the help of some late arriving Harlequins. I let him get a rhino into a deployment zone for a bonus point and we both had our shiny new rules books, so I won 22-5.

Round 2 v. Frank's Ultramarines

Primary objective: Win by 200 victory points
Secondary: The player who kills the most headquarters will achieve this objective. In the case of a tie both players accomplish the obective.
Tertiary: Annihilation (kill points)
Bonus points: have more than 10 kill points alive at the end of the game

In the above picture you can see that the fact I didn't get any sleep the night before was starting to catch up with me. You can also see that my Eldar have a pretty steep hill to climb to start getting into firing range of those Ultramarines, thank god for the run rule. My whole force spent the first couple turns sprinting as fast as they could towards the thin blue line, while my tanks quickly got up in their business. My Fire Dragons scorched Tigerius and his joined squad while the Avatar mixed it up with Frank's Commander giving me the secondary. I managed to beat up on the rest of the army pretty good (a great sequence was my Pathfinder playing cat and mouse with some outflanking Scouts in that large building you can see in the picture (let's say the Pathfinders didn't do great). I won 20-0.

Round 3 v. Nick's Black Templars
*picture unavailable*

Primary objective: Capture and control
Secondary: Destroy your opponent's highest cost troop unit
Tertiary: Destroy a non-troop unit

So Nick conceded this game after the first turn, but it was a pretty spectacular first turn. My first shot of the game, a brightlance, destroyed his Venerable Dreadnought with a six. Naturally he asked me to re-roll it. Another 6. It explodes, killing a squad member of his highest cost troop unit. They fall back off the board.

Commandant General Tyrell Arrian

This is the general of Macharius' Sixth Army Group, the callous and arrogant Tyrell Arrian. Commandant of Methalor and overall commander of it's military forces, he was thrust into his role as sixth army commander after the loss of the battleship Catachan's Fang. Also pictured is his man-servant 'Doc' holding the General's pre-battle Lho stick and hot dog.

Here is one of the Methalor ab-human units. Always known for their sticky fingers this Ratling was no different. Perhaps he should have kept his hand's off the general's stash of prize brandy...

~The Structure of a Cell~

A Treatise on the Organisation of the Alpha Legion of Space Marines

The Alpha Legion are the most secretive and mysterious of the Chaos Legions, thus aquiring information on them, much less their organisation, is incredibly challenging. Thus it is with great pleasure I present to you this analysis of the Alpha Legion structure, whose most basic building block is the Cell.

Types of Cells-While the Alpha Legion themselves do not distinguish between the types of Cells, I find this classification to be very helpful.

Daemonic Cell- These Cells reside within the Eye of Terror. They are the minority as many of the Legionnaires never went to the Eye. These Cells are those with the highest percentages of inherently Daemonic troops, such as Raptors, Possessed, Obliterators, or Defilers not to mention actual Daemons. Not to say that these units do not exist in Cells outside the Eye, they are just much rarer. These Cells are usually led by powerful Daemon Princes, and their attacks generally do not include as many Cultists as other groups.

Structure Cell- These Cells are for the most part theoretical, but are said to be made up entirely of Operatives. For those of you unaware, an Operative is a human who is part Marine, usually with psychohypnotic indoctrination and impantation of some Adeptus Astartes organs. These Operatives are usually part of the Imperial infrastructure, anything from an Adeptus Mechanicus Explorator Team to a planetary government to even members of the Inquisition. In fact, our only proof of such Cells is the defection of Inquisitor Kravin, previously the leading scholar of Alpha Legion activities. Such a Cell could potentially control an entire army, or perhaps even a whole planet.

Shadow Cell- These Cells form the majority of the Legion. These are the Marines who retreated back to the Legions hidden bases throughout the galaxy at the end of the Heresy. Most action by the Alpha Legion is perpetrated by these Cells. It is believed the largest concentration of these Cells are in the Ultima and Pacificus Segmentums. These Cells are always heavily supported by Cultists and other support, such as mutant revolts and traitorous Guard regiments. The Marines of Shadow Cells tend to have very few daemonic gifts, but do have an affinty for daemonic pieces of wargear. Since their longevity is not extended by exposure to the Warp the majority of Shadow Cell Legionnaires are new recruits. The few veteran members are believed to extend their life through various methods including extended periods of stasis, Warp tonics, and pilgrimages to the Maelstrom and the Eye.

~Escape from Bloc A-13~

Bregenzian 13th Imperial Guard v.
Methalor Penal Bloc A-13

Well back again with another report, with my Methalor IG, as promised. This is also my final 4th ed. report, so soak it in :). Here we have the valiant men of Methalor in a post-crusade situation where they have killed Imperial forces on the planet and are making their way towards the planet's one spaceport with one thing standing in their way. The forces of the Bregenzian guard.

The Penal legion must kill all opposition before them, while the Bregenzian guard must kill the traitorous prisoners to the man. Thus a 1,500 point Seek and Destroy is the game.

Deployment- The Bregenzian forces set up on two flanks with a Demolisher tank anchoring each one. The Bregenzian Stormtroopers infiltrated into a forward position. The Methalor took up a refused flank position, with forward infiltrating elements, in hopes of marching straight through the enemy and to freedom.

Convict Colonel Cash looked out across the battlefield, squinting to avoid the plumes of dust rising off the ground. The green camo of the Bregenzian armour stood out against the sand. He had led his men this far; through the Arbites, through the Commissars, and now only one barrier presented itself. To his left 'Birdman' and Boone played kabak. He hadn't seen his men this happy in some time, since before the Crusade. They had been promised a pardon, but the auxillia had gotten none. Now they were going to take their pardon.

"Load up!"

Bregenzian Turn 1
The Bregenzian armour, two Demolishers and a Chimera, advanced towards the prisoners. The Sentinels stalked stealthily forward, drawing a bead on the Methalor Demolisher, but the armour proves to great and the las-blasts glance off. Most of the Bregenzian bullets find rock as the enemy hunker into cover, though the Demolisher on the western flank blows apart three Last Chancers.

Methalor Turn 1
Demolisher Alpha blew a track on the rocks as it tried to crest a hill, while Cash's Chimera sped forward and ignited its smoke launchers. The lascannon team of Chancers 'Birdman' and Boone destroyed the Sentinel 'Lucky', which exploded in a hail of shrapnel killing three members of infantry squad Fox. Chancer Luciano blew the legs off the Sentinel 'Pot Shot' with his missle launcher. Meanwhile the autocannon squad destroyed the Bregenzian Armoured Fist while the hardened criminals of Bloc A-13 scythed down enemy infantry.

Bregenzian Turn 2
The Demolishers rolled forward while the Bregenzian Storm Troopers took up position in a wooden watch tower to the East, and loosed their hellguns, killing the autocannon heavy weapon platoon. The Bregenzian Demolisher to the west blew the cannon off of the immobilized Demolisher Alpha. The heavy bolters chattered out of the line and killed more prisoners.

Methalor Turn 2
Savoy and a small group of Chancers emerged from a hidden tunnel entrance next to the Demolisher on the eastern flank, letting loose with a meltagun to blow it sky-high. Demolisher Beta and the veterans under Lucius killed half the Storm Trooper unit while Cash's Chimera destroyed an infantry unit with its heavy bolters.

Bregenzian Turn 3
The grav-chutes of the Bregenzian Storm Troopers fluttered as they settled to the arid ground behind the Methalor lines. The Demolisher on the Western front plowed into the small copse of dried trees in which a group of Methalor Veterans hid, letting loose with its heavy flamers, leaving nothing but smoking corpses. Savoy and his group were slaughtered in a hail of bolt rounds while the freshly landed Storm Troopers blew the tracks off Cash's Chimera.

Methalor Turn 3
Convict Colonel Cash, in a rage, charged out of his Chimera towards the elite Bregenzian infantry. The Storm Troopers on the Eastern front were destroyed by the combined fire of Demolisher Beta and Travis' Veterans. Cash charged into the other Storm Troopers and he and his command squad laid them low.

Bregenzian Turn 4
The Bregenzian Drop-sentinel 'Deuce' landed behind prison lines, preparing its autocannon as it came down. Once the driver gained his bearings he lit into Cash's empty Chimera, blowing it sky high. A missle lanced out of the Bregenzian lines and blew apart Methalor Demolisher Alpha.

Methalor Turn 4
Kage and his small unit emerged from hiding and attempted to destroy the Bregenzian Demolisher with a demo charge, but it fell well short, and he and his men were left stranded. Colonel Cash charged into the Drop-sentinel and destroyed it.

Bregenzian Turn 5
Various small arms fire tore into the prisoners and a few small units fell back, though no significant losses were incurred.

Methalor Turn 5
Kage charged into the Bregenzian lines but was beaten and cut down as he ran for safety.

Bregenzian Turn 6
The Bregenzian infantry finished off a group of Methalor Veterans.

Methalor Turn 6
Demolisher Beta rolled into the wreckage of Demolisher Alpha and loosed a shell destroying the Bregenzian Demolisher on the Western flank.

Result: Draw

Battleforge 'Eavy Tournament 5/10

Once more I came down with my Mech Eldar for the Eavy tournament. I hadn't used a Falcon in over a month, which felt good, but hopefully I wasn't rusty. We had 14 people show up with some good armies. I completely forgot my camera but there was such good blog coverage at this tournament that I was able to get all my game pics. Let's break it down...

Round 1 v. Frank's Ultramarines
Well, once again I ended up against Frank in the first round of an 'eavy, and once again his dice just killed him. His single tactical error is shown in the above picture, as the Rhino wall he created ended up being much more in my favor than his, as it gave me another place to jump into him from. I got 20/21 points.

Round 2 v. Jhag's Mech IG

Jhag has a really cool Mech IG army consisting of a command HQ in a Chimera, a Grey Knight Brother-Captain, 2 Demolishers, a Battle tank, a Hellhound, 3 Grenadier squads in Chimeras, and three Hardened Veteran units. I was able to isolate the fire of two Veteran units and pick it apart piece by piece. I got everything but the Tertiary (which was pretty much impossible to get if you won) for 18/21 points. Between rounds 2 & 3 I won the knowledge quiz again to continue my streak of wins since the New Year.

Round 3 v. Bushido's Three Monolith 'Cron's

This game was a bad dream, although it was still alot of fun. I had never played against Necrons with my Eldar and boy are they rough. The Eldar really don't have much to rough up the Monoliths, although it didn't help that I couldn't roll enough to destroy it when I got hits. So here I played the numbers and just tried to guarantee that I would end up higher in the rankings than my opponent, because we were both way higher in score than anyone else. The strategy didn't pay off as a couple people gave up full points in the tables below me, but I still ended up in third, not bad for getting 0 points in one round...

Methalor Penal Auxillia, Regimental Command

The army is now complete. Here is a picture of the Methalor Penal Legion preparig to do battle against the vile mutants of Thoth.

Methalor continues...

Trooper Jonahs
Charges: Impersonating an officer

Trooper Boreas
Charges: Desertion

Well I mainly took these pics because I just made a cool little 8 by 5 inch dealy based like my army to take pics on. I've never made a full army carrying base, but I think it was good practice.

Penal Colonel Savoy

Penal Colonel Savoy
Charges: Refused a direct order

Here is the Methalor Penal Legion special character from the upcoming Macharian Crusade campaign book. He is armed with a shotgun loaded with man-stopper rounds as well as an array of prison shivs, called the 'Methalor Surprise' when he uses them. He carries the tattered remains of his disgraced regiment's banner and his old officer's hat.

Aeronautica Eldar

Got these all wrapped up this weekend, so hopefully we'll have our first game this week! I think this should make a pretty competative list, I deliberatly didn't use any Phoenixs, as I think the speed of the Nightwings is a big advantage. Hopefully it pans out.

Saturday, April 19, 2008

Well here as a counterpart to bigred's AI post, here is the start of my fleet, a tester Nightwing. We have both matched our airforce schemes to our primary 40k armies. My airforce is composed of six Nightwings and a Vampire Hunter, all with star engines. I can't wait to get these guys done, then bigred and I can throw down a nice little battle report.

Aeronautica Imperialis

Well there it is. An entire Eldar airforce for me to get painting on. A Vampire Hunter and six Nightwings I got up at Adepticon (I'll post more on that later). This game is really fun and I'll be posting up battle reports of it once I get it painted. You can see in the background my Methalor army growing, almost done now, only about five guys and a Demolisher left. That's all for now.
